Status of Paper

In the piece " The truck Stop as Community and Culture" his main idea is that a trucker is just like a cowboy. Understanding that the truck stop is like a home away from home is crucial to this piece. Kind of like no matter how far a cowboy may go he will always come back to his home. The truck stop is the home to the truckers and they will always comeback. This article most resembles a classical argument. He gives you an introduction and then narrates the whole piece while still giving you pints about what works and doesn't work in this culture. Then he defines the terminology discussed by the truckers and then sums up his work.

I am still lost about how to even approach this paper. I am confused about how to write this paper because even though it is a research paper I fill that most of the paper will come from field site and not the library. Since I am so used to doing research papers in the library it is kind of hard for me to right without having multiple books or reference materials. I have done my field sitings but the library research has been a little difficult for me. I still have to do the whole paper. This is not good because I have so many other assignments due on the same day. This paper is just reallying stressing me because I don't know how it's going to all come together. How does this paper get you interested in this subculture?

Fieldsite

There are man people entering and exiting out of the club. Performers and magazines editors are talking and networking with each other. The members of this subculture interact with each other in a non serious manner. Everyone pretty much knows each other and are cool. You see the promoters and the friends of the promoters that everyone knows. The atmosphere is real chill and laid ed back. The language that is used at the field site I am familiar with because I have a few friends who are promoters. As well as the fact that I am a young adult I use most of the terminology any way. I did have a question about why some people have to pay and others don't they just have to leave a tip in the tip jar, after the set time for everyone to pay has passed? I was told that the people who have to tip are pretty girls and the regulars at the club. Another question I had was how can you drink on the job? They said because one person does the mingling and gives away drinks, while thee other is counting the money and watching the door.

Criminal Culture

1. Why is this a good field site?
This is a good field site because the author can do his observations and have good visual aid, lots of surroundings and can see prisoners as they prepare for Hamlet. It allows him to see how the prisoners act while preparing for the play and in just everyday life as a prisoner.
2. What are good observations about this subculture that give us a better understanding of the subculture?
The author goods very in depth about the prisoners' personalities. The author is very descriptive about the whole jail from the moment he walks he walks in until the moment that he meets the prisoners. He even goes into detail about the prisoners and how they relate to the characters in the play Hamlet. The author was soon reminded that he was still in a jail when gazed a big black button that would send in the guards to protect him and the directors if any thing went wrong.
3. What interview techniques works for us to better understand the subculture?
The author asks questions that require the prisoner to give a long answer and not just a yes or no answer. This allows for the prisoner to give the audience insight on how they view they life, injunction to the play. These interviews were very informative to me because they allow to see how prisoners get information.
4. What are the norms and values of this subculture?
Most of the prisoners have little or no education. You must be strong in order to not be a weak link. There is a hierarchy system (whales and minnows). Just because the of the prisoners are actors doesn't mean that they receive special privileges.

Having understanding behind this field of promoting will allow me to be able to give my audience background information as well as insight into this secret world. This source will help clarify what promoting is all about. There are certain rules and regulations that you must follow in order to be succesful. This source is useful because it allows for direction and guidiance into the paper. Lolita

In class we learn how to navigate around the university research database system. This tool would be needed for the assignment due at the end of the week. Lolita was a novel written in about how a man would suduce young adolescent girl. The name of a novel (1958) and its main character by Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977) about a precocious schoolgirl seduced by a middle-aged man, used to designate people and situations resembling those in the book(Oxford English Dictionary). In the 1950's, the book was rejected by various publishers in the U.S. because of the moral censorship to which the novel has been subjected. Although the book was full of controversy, eventually it was published in 1955 by Olympia Press ( Willams, Gerald). The article argues that the contemporary American view of human nature is immature. Similarities between Nabokov's novel "Lolita" and Amy Fisher, who was convicted of shooting the wife of her lover, Joey Buttafuoco, are discussed in detail. Nabokov's view of his pedophilic protagonist, Humbert, is presented as a mature view of the weakness of mankind (Derbyshire,John).According to Ellendea Proffer, the first author to write about Nabokov's Russian readership, anyone with a serious interest in literature had read at least two of Nabokov's novels, and "Lolita," was always one of them. But the older generation found Nabokov's books disgusting and called the plot of "Lolita," revolting( Shekhovtsova,O.).Her title, she insists, "is meant to conjure up an image of the author of writings viewed as obscene as a child playing with his excrement and calling it art." Despite the tremendous amount of historical information and original literary criticism included on each author and on the films made from the titles, to consider Ulysses or Lolita still as "dirt" is either too old-fashioned or too postmodern for this reviewer (Cox,Shelley). The novel has transformed into a book that is read nation wide to help others know about adultery and how it is wrong.

Who am I?

When first given this assignment I thought about all the places I could have went to find the where the director of the movie could have been. I went to look at the back of the cover of the movie. I debated whether or not I was going to look on the internet or if I was going to go to the library. When I decided that there wasn't enough time to go to the library to look up the literary work I decided to use the internet. I then decided to start my quest by searching Google and yahoo. The director of the movie Brown Sugar is Rick Famuyiwa. The process of finding the director was simple I just had to look on the back of the cover of the movie. Using the internet was a way for me to access multiple sources. I decided to use the internet because it was the easiest way to go with the least amount of hassle. It was also the quickest way to go because of all the other work that I have to do. It also gives you quick results in a timely manner. The advantage of the internet has allowed for quick results on my author. Another advantage was that multiple sources came up with information about the works of that author. A disadvantage is that you have to search through and find creditable sources. Another disadvantage is that you have to be able to make sure that the information is useable. A disadvantage would be that when going to the websites that you read the reviews and they come from a creditable source. The overall task was simple no matter which publication you chose whether it was a poem, book, movie or television series.

Hip Hop Culture Around The World

Hip-hop has influenced many artists and Panjabi Mc is an example of one break through artist. His famous record though is not known by him it is better known by Jayz’s remix. The hip-hop influence around the world is undeniable because the hip-hop culture is expanding. Unlike hip-hop in America, around the world they are talking about the government or what they see every day. Hip-hop has evolved into something greater than the beat boxers, and break dancers that were jamming to the MC's. It has turned into self expression and trying to make changes.

Panjabi MC made his international breakthrough complete with "Mundian to Bach Ke" ("Beware of the Boys") during 2002 and 2003, the song was several years old. His professional career reached back to 1993.Before he was signed, the MC was honing his skills as a freestyler. Then he began to record more of his own tracks, which lead to stop using studio sounds and incorporated live musicians.

His first single, "Rootz," was released officially on an independent label, but it was banned allegedly due to politics within the bhangra music industry. A steady release of albums throughout the '90s made Panjabi MC one of the most prominent names in bhangra. "Mundian to Bach Ke," recognized immediately for its use of the dynamic bass line from the Knight Rider. The incorporation of the traditional dhol (drums) and tumbi (one-string guitar) instruments became successful across the globe, placing the MC on the U.K.'s Top of the Pops program while leading to a Jay-Z remix.

Peer Review

The peer review in class this week was somewhat helpful. I think that if we would of had more time that we could have discussed the paper more. Unfortunately I feel that we spent too much time trying to fill out the sheet of paper. I think that we get more out of a discussion about what is wrong and good about the paper. The next peer review I think that instead of trying to fill out that sheet of paper, that we should have more time to discuss the paper. I did however like the constructive criticism that was on the paper.

Logical Fallacy in PCU Movie

In the movie they use a lot of logical fallacies. The one that stood out to me the most was when the freshmen and the pit boy go to the collie head(vegan) protest. The pit boys states that " the collie heads find a global issue and stick with it for a week. This was funny because everyone knows that protest groups just focus on that one issue.

Into the Wild

After first reading the excerpt from Into the Wild I thought that McCandles (Alex) had gotten caught up in the novel written by Leo Tolstoy. I thought after reading the novel he then wanted to leave the life of the character in the novel to see how life would be if he experienced it that way. Indeed that was not why Alex wanted to go on his adventure into the bush(wild). After getting the background information about Alex things that you read in the beginning start to all come together and give you a better understanding of how Alex became the way he was. The story of McCandles is somewhat controversial to people because they don't understand how a college student could have went through all that happened in the reading.
Alex came from a wealthy and groomed family. When Alex was young his parents took notice to his ambitious to be the best. In high school his teammates realized that there was something different about him. He make them go run in unknown areas so that they would almost feel lost. Then when they would run slightly until they found a road they new and then sprint back to where they started. Alex did this because he believed that it was all mental and it quite simple to just focus your energy and win a race if you went to this regiment know as "The Road Warriors" Alex as you can see wasn't like the typical high school student and would continue to be that way the rest of his life.
Entering college Alex bought a Datsun and started going on little adventures. Then while in college some of his friends started noticing that he was changing. Alex began to start distancing himself from his friends. This is when he began to want to go on more roads trips and not talk to his parents and sister. When he graduated from Emory with a degree in history/anthropology, he declined membership into Phi Beta Kappa because he thought that titles and honors where not important. He also donated the rest of his college fund to the Oxford Famine Relief Fund. This is when he began to not have contact with anybody he knew after he graduated.
By the end of the reading Alex dies in the woods in Alaska. People all have different thoughts about why he went into the woods in the first place. Some believe it was a suicide. Reading the excerpt I gather that in his youth he read a lot and this was were his insight to know things and get better made him become very passionate. His passion then made him cocky and then when became set on an idea no one could get him to change his mind. Alex had become so composed with wanting to figure why things were not fair for everyone, that he started to become agitated by that and lashed out by not contacting his family when he went on adventures. In the woods he began to figure out himself and become more in tune with himself. He did try to come back to civilization but couldn't make it by foot and didn't want any help. But in his passing away he was calm and at peace with his self. This reading taught me that you can't try hide from your problems and try and fix them as you are hiding because the result don't always come out how you expected. In a since only fix the things you can fix and make a plan for how to fix everything else because you can self destruct.

Aids and Advertising

The United Colors of Benetton launched this photo campaign to raise money and spread awareness of Aids. Even though the photo was not a pleasant photo, it caught the attention of many people. The photo was a way to get people to start thinking about how Aids was no longer a disease just related to gay men. The photo had a lot of controversy around it because no one had every done a campaign this way before. The photo in return brought the United Colors of Benetton a lot money, and they gave a undisclosed amount to charity. Even though some people don't agree with the ad. It doesn't take away the fact people still bought clothes, gained awareness and that they even gained customers because of this ad. Some would even say that Gap even revamped this campaign in a more appealing way. Gap decided instead of showing a picture they would make a special line dedicated solely to Aids. This clothing line was called RED and when you purchased an item you got a information booklet. So in a since even though the clothing lines make way more money than they give to charity. People as a whole can't deny that it makes you want to be more aware about Aids and how it is taking over.
Though Yoplait products are less jaw dropping does it really catch your attention more? Have you taken it upon yourself to know more about breast cancer which is what Yoplait's campaign ad is all about? Yes, the company also shows us healthy people that have recovered from the disease, which is always good to see.
The ad campaign to me was shocking at first. After I started to look deeper at the situation I started thinking about how could a company use this picture to try and raise awareness. Then it dawned upon me that if you have a shocking enough photo, slogan etc... people will remember it no matter what. So the ad did serve as a useful way to catch your attention and want to learn more about how some one can look this sick. I do believe it could have been done differently but, who am I to try and discredit someones hard work and effort to raise money for a good cause. Also knowing how much the clothing companies or the food industries make off of the campaign for Aids awareness doesn't match up to the donation, how can you discredit there efforts. How many people do you that are even trying to do anything about Aids. I mean how many people do you know that do anything for basically dirt cheap in America. The reality is American people people like to see drama and agony. The more dramatic something is the longer the impression stays with you. So in all the campaign does have a good effect. Even though as people we might not all agree with the method that launched the campaign, I pretty sure that if you say that clothing store that you would go in and at least look at the clothes and ask how the contribute to an Aids organization.
